This is bad news, for bad things can happen to an ill guarded caravan in the mountains. When the duke's mercenaries attack to kill the adulterous prisoner all hell breaks loose. From the Author
After I finished writing The Wardstone Trilogy, I still had several months to go before I would be released from prison. I did not want to lapse in my religious routine of penning three thousand words a day, so I didn’t. Book One – Through the Wildwood, is a fun and intense book that introduces a few of the series main characters. I have over a thousand pages worth of Vanx Malic and his curious group of companions sitting here in longhand. I will be publishing them in eBook format, about two hundred fifty pages at a time, over the next year and a half. In lieu of further sales pitching, I invite you to click the "Look Inside" icon on the books fantastic cover image and start reading.

Enjoy the journey, M. R. Mathias

Through the Wildwood The Legend of Vanx Malic Book 1 eBook M R Mathias

I love speculative fiction, but I lean heavily in favor of the horror and bizarro genres. Except for occasional excursions into Terry Pratchett, I avoided fantasy stories. I can't even get into the LOTR and Hobbit movies let alone read them. I'll watch Smaug eventually because Benedict Cumberbatch is the voice of the dragon and his voice is almost as cool as mine. Almost.

But, to be cliche, I digress.

The book is both funny and exciting and the character development is top notch. Weighing in at just a little over 300 pages, it is a quick read that can be finished in one sitting.

Mathias has redeemed the fantasy novel in my eyes. I'm jealous of the way he lets his imagination run wild and puts it all down on paper so well. Great job!

Through the Wildwood The Legend of Vanx Malic Book 1 eBook M R Mathias Reviews

'Through the Wildwood' is the first book in M.R. Mathias' "The Legend of Vanx Malic" series and in my opinion, it is probably the best. In it we're introduced to a young bard named Vanx who was imprisoned for sleeping with the Duchess of Highlake. While he was to be sold into slavery the daughter of the Dutchess bought him and set him free. On the run with the Duke's men after them, Vanx has to not only survive but thrive.

In this work, Mathias has created an amazingly fun fantasy world. Action, adventure, romance, politics, love, hate. He weaves it all together quite well with a breakneck pace that will keep you flipping pages to see what happens next. The fights are intense and well written, some of the secondary characters are a bit flat but it would be hard to really expand upon them without slowing down which would take away from the narrative and style Mathias went for.

Quite enjoyed it and would happily suggest it to any fantasy fans out there!
Great romantic fantasy read. I had a few hours to myself and my goal was to escape while looking forward to reading a good book. This novel kept my attention. It played with my imagination which I love! The storyline soars in detail with each page consisting of whips, chains, trolls, royalty and prisoners while dealing with love, murder, confusion and desperation. Recommend!
M.R. Mathias creates a magical world with The Legend of Vanx Malic Through the Wildwood. Mathias does a great job of instantly throwing us into the story and giving us some back story all at the same time. Which left me wondering how this tied back to the title but by the end of the book Mathias had shown us the great legend. I originally started the series with book two and while you can still understand the story and situation it makes more sense after reading this book first as Mathias intended. Mathias gives us insight to each characters morals without bluntly saying here they are. Once again Mathias brings unique, at least in my opinion, magical creatures to the story. The kobrary and enta are my favorites from this book. I have noticed that Mathias tries to put at least one unique creature in each book even if they only make that one appearance. Once again Mathias did not let me down with this book and I am eager to continue the journey with Vanx.
This is the first book in a series and if you don’t like cliffhangers be prepared. It’s a very good story for the first one in series. It’s very unique it is a book that I definitely wasn’t expecting to be drawn into as easy as I was. If you like books about royalty and the stories that are similar to Lord Of The Rings or The Hobbit you should enjoy this immensely. It’s just the right length for me and I absolutely loved the characters because I have a love for memorable characters. I was very disappointed with the ending though because I felt as though the way it ended was too sudden. The book stops right at a very intense moment. Even though there is a sample of the second book at the end, I still feel that the author could have ended the book a little. I think overall the story is nearly five stars and I definitely would pick it up if you don’t mind abrupt endings.

This is how the author describes his book. I will say that this does not do justice to the wild ride this group of people go through, because many do not come out of the Wildwood! This story is a lot of fun and there are so many elements expertly woven together; we have a hero who loves to serenade others and drink a few ales, there is a princess in disguise, a queen that cuckolds her husband with the bard, a devious commander setting up the murder of the bard and others. Giant cats and dogs provide transportation, wizards that are not always awake, ogres, trolls and walking trees! Something for everyone!

If you love fantasy, you have several hours of pleasure waiting for you in this book. I rate this book 4.7 stars of 5. Mr. Mathias has constructed a comfortable and believable world. The only drawback is the head hopping, we spend a little too much time in the heads of different characters. More dialog and action would push a great story to the top!
