Thurbin does not disappoint in this, his fourth book in the Ralph Chalmers mystery series. When Ralph finds himself the beneficiary of a rather sizeable inheritance from his Uncle Harry, he decides to throw his usual caution to the wind and uses it to buy a yacht and a cottage on the North Devon coast. The discovery of an abandoned fishing trawler in a rocky cove soon sets the scene for his involvement in gang warfare, smuggling and possibly murder. Not surprisingly, the feisty Katie Eggerton, his friend and assistant, joins him in applying his sleuthing skills to investigate a series of mysterious happenings near the sleepy seaside village of Clovelly. Katie indulges her passion for horse riding on the moors while Ralph takes time from his work to join a watercolour painting workshop. Their summer idyll is shattered when it becomes clear that the death of an Olympic Show jumper from what was thought to be a riding accident has more sinister implications.
The Devon police and Europol investigate an International smuggling operation linked to Al Qaeda and grudgingly accept help from Ralph and Katie. A pair of eccentric antiques dealers, a flamboyant restaurant owner, a wealthy retired industrialist and the stressed out local doctor are just some of the many characters that our adventurous pair get to know at the Vicar’s garden party.
The story culminates with our intrepid duo setting a trap for the mastermind behind an international smuggling gang and as usual adding an exciting twist that will engross and delight the reader.
Thurbin’s characters are, as always, engaging, and his research impeccable. This book is a must for the reader who likes to unravel a mystery and at the same time be transported into the classic English countryside and a local culture that has hardly changed over the past 100 years. You can almost smell the salt breeze and hear the seagulls wheeling overhead as Thurbin’s stalwart hero does his part to keep the wheels of justice turning. A must for current Ralph Chalmers fans and for mystery enthusiasts searching for a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Murder at High Tide The Ralph Chalmers Mysteries Book 4 edition by PJ Thurbin Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Read this fourth book for a vacation in Devon on the coast and a mystery with modern day smugglers .
Interesting book giving the reader plenty to think about and keeping them interested ,before the final result which was in doubt right up to the end
This is a good read with enough twists to keep you interested.
I enjoyed this book, the descriptions of Devon and it's small villages hit the right note and together with interesting characters- this murder mystery is one to be enjoyed.
It was an interesting story about the smuggling and I really enjoyed the nostalgia of having spent much time over the years in Devon and the surrounds.
On the one hand, I am reading my way through the series now well represented on kindle at quite a reasonable price of one buck plus a few cents (including tax in my state); on, the other hand, I am always a little bit uneasy with the non-academic activities assigned to this British College Professor. Of course, he teaches business-related subjects and I, therefore, cut the author more slack than I would if it were English or Classic Languages. Still and all, while cerebration is appropriate to the professorial role, derring-do is a bit much to swallow.
I do prefer him when his University is the setting of the book's business, but this is not one of those. Here, he and his lady friend, he and she are still in doubt about what their relationship actually is and will be, are on vacation from academic life, living in a cottage which he has just purchased but of which they are now co-owners and co-habitants. He is a sailing devotee, she has the same strong feelings about horse-riding. Singly and together, their activities bring home that something is very much amiss in this relatively isolated setting of England and, being who he is (hero of a mystery series), he is compelled by his nature to get involved. Mysterious deaths, possible murder, import of goods without payment of appropriate fees, and the like, draw both in deeper, with, of course, both positive and negative responses from the local authorities.
The author does not scintillate nor even ever seem to be a sophisticated master of prose, but the story is told in straightforward, literate style, and I find his books, this one among them, decent light reads with a generally interesting cast. They do seem pegged, for now, at the one buck price, and, as such, are a good buy when one does not want to get deeply submerged in passions and malignancy.
Nothing deep here. Just a little seaside mystery. Light reading and good for a beach read
No violence for the squeamish or faint of heart.
Good fun
